I wonder if the Costco site on Gateway Park/Sportsworld would be a good location for an athletics facility of some sort one day. Not necessarily central, but it would have great transit and highway access.

There are hockey rinks in the neighbourhood already, so perhaps.

Surely the Centennial Stadium location would be the most logical. It's central, accessible by both transit and highway, can share parking with the Auditorium, and the city already owns the land.

Didn't Sportsworld go bankrupt after overleveraging themselves to build those ice rinks?

What are they building in Cherry Park right across from the church? It look octagonal in shape.

Aren't they building a picnic shelter in Cherry Park?

I was going to suggest that it might be an outdoor UFC ring...

Sounds like the recent news from Red Deer, as reported by CBC's "This is That" radio program:

CBC: Red Deer installs MMA octagons for kids in city parks

You can listen to an interview about the project here.

Okay, someone needs to get a photo to send in to them.

Quote:Mall emerging as Cambridge multiplex front runner
CAMBRIDGE — Tear down an abandoned Sears store and build four rinks and a double-gym in its place.

That's the gist of Cambridge's slowly evolving sports multiplex future.

It's the new preferred skates-and-sneakers option city staff want to pursue with Morguard Real Estate, owner of the Cambridge Centre mall.

The idea is to build ice sheets and hard courts on the central Cambridge transit-hub spot, which can be leased from a mall that already has its own hockey rink next to a food court.

On Monday night, city council will be asked to allow city staff to negotiate a memorandum of understanding with the Hespeler Road mall's owners.

Seems like a good plan to me. Between rinks, an athletic court, a movie theatre, a bowling alley, and laser tag, the mall should be busier than it ever was with Zellers and Sears.

RE: General Sports and Recreation News - tomh009 - 12-02-2017

An active mall! This should actually be a very good outcome of the Sears bankruptcy and the sportsplex dilemma.

RE: General Sports and Recreation News - DHLawrence - 12-02-2017

A couple office towers out front wouldn't go amiss either, but one thing at a time.

RE: General Sports and Recreation News - DHLawrence - 12-05-2017

And it's official!

Cambridge Centre Mall chosen for ice rink, gym portion of multiplex

That's excellent news. And a unanimous vote, that's nice to see for the Cambridge council!
