RE: General Arts and Culture News - zanate - 02-16-2016

I keep thinking that this project would put its hosts on the hook for a new statue every change of PM. Because who wants to walk around in 2035 and see a community with statues of all the PMs up to 2015? Talk about a way to put an expiry date on your civic pride.

That liability could also be an asset, I guess. Work out where each new statue goes as each leader retires. But as Kim Campbell showed, you don't need to be PM long to be included in this project. A little bit of bad luck and we could be having to put up 5 or 6 statues a decade. That would start to get a little crowded, and pricey.

As a proposed sesquicentennial project, I assume that the donors' intent is to limit the statues to those who served as PM between 1867 and 2017.  Somebody else could decide whether to update the project, come 2067.  In any event, with two rejections under their belt, I am wondering whether the proponents won't decide to throw in the towel.  Perhaps, in hindsight, they should have planned some sort of monument, with an educational component, to honour our 150 years as a representative democracy.

An interesting parallel in the States about a failed attempt at a "museum" of presidential busts: http://bokeh.digitalrev.com/article/rise-and-fall-43-presidential-heads-in-virginia-state

Maybe that's what happened on Easter Island.  Smile

I don't think Trudeau's divorce should preclude his statue being included among the others.

Thanks for the reply I really had no idea.

This editorial echoes the comments we made here yesterday. This was a teachable moment, but the WLU community chose ignorance instead.

I think someone at The Record reads Waterloo Region Connected.

RE: General Arts and Culture News - panamaniac - 02-17-2016

I'm trying to remember whether the Record was equally strong in criticising Kitchener City Council's half-baked decision to reject the proposal to place the statues in Victoria Park.

The (first?) "Irish Real Life Festival" is taking place in K-W on March 12 - 19, with a number of food, beverage, cultural, and family events. Hope it's successful - it would make a nice annual event!

Prime Ministers Project - WLU’s decision to remove the statue of John A. Macdonald is cowardly and disgraceful

Always nice to have a local issue get some national attention…

I don’t always (or even usually) agree with Conrad Black, but enjoy his writing. On this case, he’s not speaking in very practical terms, but I can’t disagree.

RE: General Arts and Culture News - panamaniac - 03-22-2016

I wonder if the PM statues idea has died, or if the proponents are still working on the idea? At some point, I imagine it would be too late to have all the statues cast and installed in time to mark 2017. Is the Sir John A. statue supposed to be removed from the WLU campus?
